An Update!
We have 3, count ‘em THREE, followers! Whoopee! And we have TWO profiles up!
And by we I mean me. This is a solo effort because these are my friends. My actual, talk to on a regular to semi-regular basis, have their cell phone numbers, make coffee dates with those who live nearby FRIENDS! And I think that’s pretty cool.
I started this blog as a means of spreading the word about how awesome they are. They are mostly from the United States and Canada and are one or more of the following:
Actors
Directors
Artists
Writers
Heads of Production or Creative-type Companies
Filmmakers
Models
Singers
Songwriters
Musicians
Photographers
Designers
Dancers
And some of them have even won awards, topped sales lists, sold their albums from here to Australia, are worth millions of dollars and - you won’t believe it - a couple even have their own IMDB pages! I know, right?
Sadly, you’ve probably never heard of them or haven’t heard of all the amazing things they’re doing and about to do. Until now! More profiles are rolling in so keep checking back. And please do spread the word. Follow via Tumblr or RSS, ok? Get on it!
You can also keep in touch via our Twitter - friendsandstars
Soon I hope you can say, as I can,
I knew you when!
Meet Sarah Kernohan - Artist
Who Are You?
Sarah Kernohan
Where Are You From?
I grew up in London, Ontario, Canada.
Where Are You Now?
Kitchener, Ontario, Canada
What Do You Do?
I make large drawings that let me explore ideas about landscape,
memory, accumulation, and overload. I also do a lot of work with
CAFKA (Contemporary Art Forum of Kitchener and Area) as Vice-chair,
and am involved in many facets of the organization.
What Have You Done?
I have exhibited my work regionally and internationally in places as
close as Kitchener, Stratford, and Toronto and as far-flung as New
Zealand and Italy. I have visited the American desert, Walter de
Maria’s Lightning Field, drawn for an entire weekend without going
outdoors, and hopped on a train to go on a hike. Most recently I
exhibited a drawing that was 30 feet long that combined a year’s worth
of research about panorama, glaciers, collage-based composition.
Why Do You Do It?
I draw because it is one of the things that happens to come to me
naturally, and I’ve fallen for it continuously. I draw on a large
scale because it’s the only way that I can get in to my subject
matter. I’m involved with CAFKA because I want to see exciting
contemporary art in the city that I live in and enjoy being part of
making that happen.
How Did You Get to This Point?
I studied art for a number of years and graduated from OCAD with a
specialization in drawing and painting. I have amazing friends and
mentors who encourage and push me and my practice on a continual
basis. I have also allowed my studio practice and visual art in
general to pervade my lifestyle. At the end of the day, there is
nothing more exhilarating than building new work for a new exhibition
space.
What Amazing Project Are You Currently Working On?
I’m working on two projects right now. I’m doing a group show at Paul
Petro Contemporary Art in Toronto in June 2010 with Leigh Bridges,
Shannon Partridge, Melanie Rocan, and Julie Beugin and am building a
set of small drawings for that show that address small areas of
movement - eddies, breaking points, and points of change. This will be
the first time that I have worked on a smaller scale since 2007. I am
also working on a project with composer/sound artist David Jensenius
called the Shoreline Project which will be a series of artist books
and recordings thinking about the river and shoreline structures and
the accumulated bits of debris that make these geographic features
distinctive.
What Should The People Know About You?
I will almost never say no to coffee.
When You Fantasize About TV Interviews, Who Is Interviewing You and
What Do You Talk About?
I would love to sit down and talk with Simon Schama about visceral
experiences with works of art. My second-best would be to do a
televised conversation with Erik Odijk where we sat down and pored
over each other’s photo albums from different trips that we’ve taken
and talk about drawing.
What’s Your Dream Project?
Being shipped out to the Canadian Arctic or Iceland to make new work
for the Venice Biennale.
Who Would You Love to Work With?
Katie Paterson, Julie Mehretu, Erik Odijk, Robert Wiens, Mariele
Neudecker, Daniel Zeller.
What Will You “Never” Do, and Why?
I will “never” use a Sharpie in a drawing - it’s too fat, messy, and clunky.
What Do You Believe In?
Art. Determination. Chance.
How Will You Spend All That Money You’re Going to Make?
On travel, studio space, my tea supply, and a beautiful espresso
machine for my studio.
What Cause Will You Get Behind?
Affordable space for artists in Kitchener, artist-run initiatives.
What Will You Say in Your First Award Speech?
Thanks for always asking questions but never asking too many.
Do You Plan to Keep It About The Industry or Use Every Opportunity to
Talk About Obama/Global Warming/Lindsey Lohan/Etc?
I’ll keep it about the industry, thank you.
What’s The Clip/Project You Most Hope Jimmy Kimmel Doesn’t Show During
Your First Interview?
I don’t think that I’m on video, but I’ll be curious to see what he digs up.
What’s Your Go-To Designer/Brand or Outfit for Auditions/Interviews/Go-Sees?
My best jeans, a great scarf, the cuff that I bought at a flea market
in Brooklyn last spring, and my version of power-earrings.
